HOW YOU CAN HELP DEPENDENTS

Addictions are often taboo among friends or acquaintances. This is a fairly common situation, but very dangerous at the same time. If an addict is alone and has no person with whom he trusts and supports him, he may be blindly addicted to the addiction, which can lead to dire consequences.

Friends or relatives often do not know how to behave towards people who perceive addiction. Some people also try to “help” by blaming them or by constantly persuading them to see a doctor. So how to behave towards people addicted to drugs, alcohol, medications and many more? It is worth reading the following tips so that you know how to behave in good time to support the sick.

Don’t pretend the problem doesn’t exist

There is often a situation in which friends pretend that they do not see the addict’s problem – sometimes they even turn the addiction into a joke. In order to be able to support the sick person in any way, both people must first admit that the problem really exists.

Conversations without taboos and shame with a loved one make the interlocutors honest with each other and the addicted person can feel safe. In such a close relationship, there is a possibility of help, and at the same time a chance to start a path that will lead to a decision about treatment.

Find out about addiction

It is difficult to help a person who does not understand the mechanisms of action. Therefore, when you find out what addiction your friend has mastered, you should read about him. A few articles from specialized publications will allow you to get to know the addiction at least a little. As a result, it is easier to understand the individual behavior of the patient.

It will be good not only for your friend but also for you! Thanks to this, you will understand that any unfavorable behavior towards you is not directed at you personally, it results more from the addiction itself. On the other hand, you will better support someone close to you.

Support the addicted person with your presence

It is not always necessary to say a lot – sometimes it is enough to simply be present, knowing that the sick person has someone to rely on. This is extremely important, especially as in the case of addiction, patients move away from their immediate family or friends. This is primarily due to a change in behavior, which causes mutual misunderstanding.

Be yourself and do not force the addict

The truth is a very important foundation of any relationship. This also happens when you know an addicted person. Justifying or protecting the sick person does not help in therapy – on the contrary, it can cause the disease to develop.

Remember that an adult addicted should bear the consequences of his actions and be aware of what he is doing. Only then is he able to recognize his condition and conclude that he needs specialist help.

Honesty is also very important – if a sick person trusts you and rely on you, he will accept your suggestions and thoughts much easier. Such support allows you to make a decision about starting therapy faster.
